ARCHIVE TIPS: PICTURES ON YOUR WALL

Ultimately, the best way to care for your photos is to store them out of sunlight, in an archival-quality album or box, away from humidity and air pollutants (such as cigarette smoke).

But no doubt you’d like some photos on your wall.

We recommend storing the originals in a safe place, and only exhibiting prints which can be replaced on walls. We use a professional Sydney-based framer who uses the best techniques and materials to prolong the lifespan of framed photos. No definite lifespan can be guaranteed. Estimates could be given, but until today’s techniques have been tried and tested over the decades, no-one can be sure how long they’d last.

FRAMED PHOTOS
These are dry mounted using a dry adhesive film on to a backing board. Some framers use a spray adhesive, which contains chemicals which can potentially harm photographs. The adhesive film used in this process could still be damaging over the years, but is the best of the bunch available today.

The glass helps protect the photographs against the elements. Our packages start with standard glass. However, customers can upgrade to a much superior product called Tru-Vue (link www.tru-vue.com) , which boosts UV protection and is reflection-free. This can cost an extra £10-£50 per photo, depending on its size.

CANVASES
These look a bit like paintings. They are made of canvas stretched across a frame, and have the image printed on top. This is covered by a gloss or matte laminate, which helps protect the work against the elements.

FOAMBOARDS
This is a lightweight 15mm* layer of foamboard, upon which a photo is mounted and laminated. This gloss or matte laminate helps protect the work against the elements.
